Company wants to buy my domain.

Question

I was contacted this morning by a company to purchase a single name domain I acquired a couple weeks ago. They said that it was their company website and the IT guy failed to renew it.

I know it takes around 45 days for a site to go from expired to available. So is this really an excuse. Anyone have any experience with this and What should I do? He wants to pay me what it cost to register the domain.

There are many companies that use this same word in there name but not exactly. Since I recently purchased it, there isn't a whole lot I can do during the 60 day lock/transfer period. The value on esti-bot only shows it worth a few hundred bucks. To me it was worth more just by the name factor. I had no intentions on selling it but figured I could develop it into something cool. The dot com & net are both parked pages.

It is a .us domain.

Please any help would be appreciated.

UPDATE: I searched for past domain information. There is nothing showing in Wayback or links in google.

Hi,

Agree with Jorge: they must show evidence of their past use of the domain name (website or email), and supporting IP rights (TM, business name...)

Failing that, you should not even pay attention to their claim.

You may have a look to the history of the domain (if any) in a search engine.

I was gonna suggest the "Way Back Machine", but you did that :)

I would ask them to offer some "proof" that they owned it before. Then, you have to decide how nice you want to be.

You could offer to point it at their old IP-address for a while via DNS (for a price?). That would be a way to find out if they really had any content there.

I also think you can DELETE/DROP the domain during that first 60 days.
