Q319 · DOMAINS
registering different extensions of existing sites
ASKED BY JOHNLEE · 2010.10.31
is it ok if i register names of existing sites with different extensions?
for example:
the domain name: Aapya.com is taken
but Aapya.net Aapya.co Aapya.org are not
is it ok if i register them, put them up for sale, show advertisements on them?

Absolutely! Many people do that (especially to prevent others from doing it), but there are some caveats:
If the word(s) in the domain are trademarked, you still have to worry about violating that trademark. Like any domain registration.
Google and most search engines seem to prefer the .COM. So it is harder to rank in google for other TLDs.
What is sniping? And how does it apply to domain auctions? · Are there any one-word dot-COM domain names still available? · When I open my Godaddy domain, it says ‘This web page is parked free, courtesy of godaddy.com’
