  • Don't buy on impulse.

  • Don't buy "brandable" names. This means names that "sound good", but don't apply to any particular existing product. "PhunkyPhone.com", etc.

When you start domaining, it's important to "get a feel" for the landscape. What are the tools? What's the terminology domainers are using? Who are the players?

How do you start figuring this out?

The site DomainMindMap.com has a cool visualization of the entire domaining universe. It's a great tool for getting started. Or, even if you already know what you're doing.

Here's a screenshot:

Read the book "The Domain Game", by David Kesmodel. That gives a great introduction to the Domaining and how it all started. I learned a ton from it.
