Looking for details about how often typo sites get reclaimed, and if the reclaiming parties ever pay to get them back. Also, is there any legal rights to hold onto the domains and request a settlement?

I think it depends a lot on who owns the trademark for the typo.

For example, Verizon is known to go after squatters. I think the bigger the company, the bigger the risk.

Another example is athlete names. Recently Chris Bosh, an NBA basketball player, won his domain CHRISBOSH.COM back -- along with 800 other squatted domains as part of a legal settlement. More info here; http://www.avantla.com/blog/2009/10/14/stevenashcom-and-800-other-athelete-domains-freed

It comes down to this: Squatting is a bad idea.
